• Eletrobras and Ocean Winds have formed a strategic partnership to explore offshore wind energy opportunities in the country.
• The collaboration for shared knowledge and joint work was formalized between Ocean Winds and Eletrobras through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which was presented during Brazil Wind Power event in 2024.
October 22, 2024 – São Paulo, Brazil. Ocean Winds (OW), an international company dedicated to offshore wind energy and created as a 50-50 joint venture in 2020 by EDP Renewables (Euronext: EDPR) and ENGIE (Euronext: ENGI), has formalized a partnership with Eletrobras by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) this Tuesday in São Paulo.
The signing of this partnership represents Ocean Winds’ and Eletrobras’ strong commitment to advancing offshore wind projects within the country while aligning with its renewable energy and economic development goals. This important agreement was signed during a ceremony attended by Elio Wolff, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development of Eletrobras, and Rafael Munilla, Chief Business Development Officer of Ocean Winds, and was presented at the most recent edition of the Brazil Wind Power event held in São Paulo, organized by ABEEolica and Informa.
This alliance combines Ocean Winds’ extensive experience in offshore wind projects – from origination to operation, with the expertise of Eletrobras, the largest company of the electric sector in Latin America. With its leading role in power generation and transmission, Eletrobras is instrumental in helping Brazil meet the climate commitments related to the energy transition assumed at the last COP.
Ocean Winds strategically targets Brazil due to its significant potential to meet the long-term growing renewable energy demand, support the energy transition and generate opportunities for the supply chain and local communities. This commitment not only strengthens the country’s energy objectives but also fosters sustainable development and economic growth.
Leonardo Soares Walter, M&A and Business Development Director for Eletrobras, commented: “Eletrobras aims to allocate its capital appropriately through the development of clean energy projects, contributing to the energy transition in Brazil and around the world. Today, 97% of the energy generated by the company already comes from clean and renewable sources, and we will quickly reach 100% through the sale of thermal power plants underway. The company has also set itself the goal of becoming Net Zero by 2030, always aiming for a more sustainable future.
The agreement signed with Ocean Winds allows the development of a strategic cooperation, which will contribute to ensuring that the generating sources in Brazil and the world become increasingly cleaner and renewed, guaranteeing the decarbonization of the economy with energy security.”
Rafael Munilla, Chief Business Development Officer of Ocean Winds, said: “Ocean Winds is pleased to announce our partnership with Eletrobras, combining our offshore wind expertise with Eletrobras’ extensive energy legacy in Brazil. We look forward to building a long-term relationship with Eletrobras to assist Brazil in tapping into its natural wind resources for a sustainable energy future, while also promoting local job creation and community development.”
Ocean Winds has established itself as a pioneering leader in the offshore wind sector, with a substantial project portfolio of 18.5 GW across eight countries. Our commitment to facilitating the green transition compels us to support promising regions for offshore wind energy, such as Brazil. A notable example of this commitment is the registrations with IBAMA for 15 GW of projects located in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Rio Grande do Sul.
